East Sussex Reptile and Amphibian Society
East Sussex Reptile and Amphibian Society History
The East Sussex Herpetology Society was founded in 1982. This was the Societies original name.
In the beginning the Society began in a member’s front room.
Its main aim was to encourage the captive care and husbandry of exotic Reptiles and Amphibians.
Quiet quickly the Society grew in size and a new venue was required to house the growing membership.
The first group meeting of the newly formed Society was held at the Westham Village Hall near Pevensey in East Sussex.
The Society continued to grow and flourish with a broad membership of people interested in various Reptiles Amphibians and Invertebrates.
During this time notable speakers visited our society including Chris Newman, David Alderton and the late Clinton Keeling
Around about 1990 it was decided to rename the Society the East Sussex Reptile and Amphibian or ESRAS for short
In 2007 it was decided to centralise the Society to enable members from East and West Sussex better access to the Society.
A new venue was sought and eventually it was decided to move the Society to its present venue at the Falmer Village Hall just outside Brighton,
The society has continued to flourish and develop and we are looking forward to celebrating our 30 years of existence in 2012.
